The driving force behind the phenonmena is the technonolgy called MP3.This is the technology that has changed the music industry.MP3 is an acronym for Motion Pictures Expert Group Audio Layer III. The standards were set in 1992 by the Industry Standards Organisation, beginning with MPEG-1 which was used primarily for video compression. MP3 technology was developed by a German company Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, who now licenses the patent rights to the multitude of companies that now use the technology common in your MP3 players.
